Irene N. Wekesa is a 40 year-old widow with 5 children and ¼ acre of land to live, raise cows and grow bananas. She is part of a group of banana growers in the Magemo community joined together to form a community-based organization (CBO). She makes money selling her bananas on the other side of the bridge. She bought a cow with her first profit. She uses the cow manure to fertilize her banana plants. Irene is now building a new house and has joined the village savings and loan group. “To grow bananas you need manure and water.” |
