The Heequeendo community-based organization (CBO) processes bananas and runs a small restaurant and shop in the Bungoma East district. The group was formed in 2007 by 23 people living with aids (PLWA). The group primarily engaged in home-based care for their members. In 2010 the IFAD supported Smallholder Horticulture Marketing Programme (SHOMAP) began providing business training to community groups to add value to activities and encourage innovative approaches to business opportunities and product development. The group makes hats and other garments from banana fiber, produces food seasoning with banana ash and has developed a number of interesting recipes using local vegetable to sell in their small restaurant. |
