Title: Burundi – Agricultural Intensification and Value-enhancing Support Project – Nov 2013
Description: Leonidas Mukeramana, 30 years old, and his wife Caritas Nzohabonimana and their four children in Kagwa hill village, Gitaramaka Community, Karausi Province, Burundi on 20 November 2013.

Leonidas has two cows and one calf. He has already given first born calf to another receiving farmer participating in the programme. He has grown grass to feed the cows and built a pen to keep the cows as per the "zero-grazing" technique. He collects rainwater to provide water to livestock.

The dairy cows produce a total of 12 litres of milk a day. Leondias sells 6 litres and keeps 6 litres to supplement his family's diet. They do not have a dairy cooperative and have to sell to a private buyer at 400 Burundi shilling per litre.

When asked if he has enough food Leonidas said "Even sometimes we get hungry but it is better than before since we have received the cows".

"Before we had cows, we had problems to have food, now it is better than before. I can get enough to feed my family. I don't have problems now to buy school materials. When I harvest my bananas, beans and groundnuts, I have enough food to eat. I am increasing my fields more and more. "

Leonidas and Caritas two school-age children have shoes that they use to walk to school, at home they stay without shoes.
