Title: Mongolia - Rural Poverty Reduction Programme - June 2009
Description: Dahawaa, 53, 5 children, makes bricks in Huvsgul Aimag. He bought a brick making machine with a loan from the project.

“There are several brick makers in the Aimag but I have lots of clients because my bricks are very good quality.”

Dahawaa bought a brick making machine with a loan from the project. Unemployment is high in the Aimag centers and there is little opportunity for those who do not herd animals. In order to take the pressure off the land and to provide opportunities for those who live in the villages and towns, several training programs have been established by the project to stimulate and initiate income-generating activities for the poorest households, many headed by women. These activities include sewing, weaving, felt making, food processing (including vegetable conservation), woodworking, hairdressing, baking, furniture decoration, photography, clothing recycling and brick making. Because soms have a very small population, it is important that activities are varied and spread out in order to give entrepreneurs a chance to succeed.
