Maria de Fatima da Silva, 43 years old, works performs laboratory analysis of the sweetness and flavor content of cashew pulp at the settlement Mulunguzinho, municipality of Mossoro, Rio Grande do Norte state, northeastern Brazil. This processing unit belongs to a group of women supported by the Cooperxique Cooperative and IFAD through the Farmers Organizations for Latin America project, with the European Union financing. Each farmer is unique within the Cooperxique Cooperative and is at a specific moment in their life, agroecological production and marketing within the solidarity economy. From those who produce for their own family's subsistence, to those who sell their surplus production at local fairs and in the cooperative's bodega, and even those who are in medium or large productions aiming to enter private markets, such as chains supermarket. It is up to the cooperative to keep an eye on each member’s profile and seek strategies to involve and support everyone. The community has managed to install automated equipment at the fruit pulp factory and the animal breeding program for slaughter, which directly benefits young people. FO4LA is a project implemented for the first time in Latin America to increase income and to improve livelihood, food and nutrition security and safety of family farmers, who are affiliated to targeted Farmers Organizations within the region. With financial support of the European Union (EU) IFAD acts as technical and administrative managing entity. FO4LA has covered Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru, together with 15 agricultural organizations participating in value chains such as coffee, quinoa, cocoa and sugar cane, among others. The project has been especially relevant when the problems historically suffered by small farmer organizations in the region (insecure land tenure, lack of mechanization, ecosystem degradation, price volatility, limited access to quality inputs and support services weak) have been aggravated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Latin America and the Caribbean. This initiative in the region is aligned with the objectives of the European Union, aimed at promoting and supporting the creation of peasant organizations, as well as improving the productivity of family farms and developing agricultural markets and value chains in partner countries. |
