Tiago Jose Souza is a producer who has been growing vegetables for 25 years at the small farm Asa Branca in Mossoro, Rio Grande do Norte state, northeastern Brazil. He works on packaging okra following health standards, by using clean packaging labeled with a seal that guarantees the organic quality of his products. A few years after starting his business, Tiago discovered the Cooperxique Cooperative and joined it to accomplish his dream of becoming a more successful farmer by accessing to organic markets. Through the Farmers Organizations for Latin America project (FO4LA), which helped farmers organizations to improve, IFAD and the Cooperxique Cooperative have provided key support for Tiago and other farmers in Brazil to obtain an organic certification - extended by his own community members - to become an organic food producer. "Through the certification process, we are able to make collective decisions, because everyone has a voice and can say something that is good for all”, Tiago says. Within the framework of the FO4LA project, the Cooperxique cooperative received support to make investments in production, bottling and agro-industrial dosing equipment, and to contract services for the implementation of the barcode system and the layout of printing plates for packaging. All this, in order to achieve market expansion with better sales prices and results of industrial-commercial activity. FO4LA is a project implemented for the first time in Latin American to increase income and to improve livelihood, food and nutrition security and safety of family farmers, who are affiliated to targeted Farmers Organizations within the region. With financial support of the European Union (EU) IFAD acts as technical and administrative managing entity. FO4LA has covered Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru, together with 15 agricultural organizations participating in value chains such as coffee, quinoa, cocoa and sugar cane, among others. The project has been especially relevant when the problems historically suffered by small farmer organizations in the region (insecure land tenure, lack of mechanization, ecosystem degradation, price volatility, limited access to quality inputs and support services weak) have been aggravated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Latin America and the Caribbean. |
