Title: Kenya - Smallholder Horticulture Marketing Programme (SHOMAP), November 2013
Description: John Rimui with his newly bottled tomato sauce or ketchup that he makes with a fruit pulper near Leshau, Nyandarua County, Kenya.

“This greenhouse technology came to Nyandarua and I was the first person to accept it. The others came to learn from me. Many came along and learned to build their own greenhouses. We thought that in the area we have at least 35 farming families; why not make a group of interested parties? We thought that then we could apply for help. We received 365,000 Kenyan shillings (approx. USD 4200) to buy a fruit pulper. This was used to process tomatoes. We learned that we had to register our tomato sauce with the Kenya Bureau of Standards. We needed to get certification. The first time we failed. Right now we can sell locally and to our friends but we cannot sell to supermarkets. We are trying to bring the standard up so that we can be certified, then we can sell to a larger market “
