Rwanda - Climate Resilient Post-Harvest and Agribusiness Support Project (PASP) - Oct. 2016
Description:
Grace Mukamana is a smallholder farmer from rural Rwanda. Like many farmers in the eastern province of the country, Grace has been struggling to grow her maize, beans and coffee because of persistent drought and a shortage of rainfall. Over the past five years, erratic weather patterns have devastated her harvests and continue to put her family and community at risk of hunger. Through an IFAD-supported project, she receives training in climate change risk management and timely weather information via an SMS text on her cell phone. The daily weather information and training helps Grace choose the right seeds, plan her agricultural activities in advance and invest in crop insurance when drought strikes. This support has helped Grace nearly double her yields, feed her family and send her four children to school.
