Title: Tonga, Tonga Rural Innovation Project - Phase II, December, 2019
Description: 'Eua residents Salome Vea (Left) and Sifa Hafoka (Right) hand paint traditional kupesi designs onto ngatu in the Angaha Community Hall. Ngatu, also known as tapa in other parts of Polynesia, is a type of cloth made from the pounded bark of the mulberry tree. Angaha Community Hall recently underwent a renovation as part of Tonga Rural Innovation Project - Phase II. In light of the cyclone Gita which devastated the island of 'Eua in February 2018, the community hall was restructured to withstand category 5 storm winds to ensure a safe refuge for community members. The community hall serves multiple purposes. Members of the community gather there to create handicrafts, such as ngatu and weavings.
