Ngatu, also known as tapa in other parts of Polynesia, is a type of cloth made from the pounded bark of the mulberry tree. Angaha Community Hall recently underwent a renovation as part of Tonga Rural Innovation Project - Phase II. In light of the cyclone Gita which devastated the island of 'Eua in February 2018, the community hall was restructured to withstand category 5 storm winds to ensure a safe refuge for community members. The community hall serves multiple purposes. Members of the community gather there to create handicrafts, such as ngatu and weavings. |
