Title: Djibouti, PROGRES Soil and Water Management Programme, March 2021
Description: The IFAD-funded Soil and Water Management programme (PROGRES) in collaboration with WFP and Government of Djibouti, offers education and awareness actions on good nutrition and hygiene to pregnant and breastfeeding women and mothers of young children in the vast arid region of Tadjourah, Djibouti. The practices they learn have made it possible to prevent certain diseases, such as diarrhea, and malnutrition, as well as to correct vitamin deficiencies to prevent stunting. The women also learn to produce vegetables in their vegetable gardens and prepare a variety of meals. Home gardening is possible as a result of improvements PROGRES made to the country’s water infrastructure by constructing a system of cisterns and reservoirs that harvest and store rainfall. Women now have easy access to safe water for drinking and cooking, and also benefit from being able to grow fresh foods.
