Sao Tome - National Smallholders Support Programme - May 2001
Description:
Beneficiaries sorting fermented cocoa beans before shipping. Sao Tome’s economy is dependent on cocoa, which accounts for approximately 90% of its exports. Cocoa production steadily declined after São Tomé's independence in 1975 mainly because of ageing cocoa trees and plantation mis-management. The project is aiming to increase cocoa production through training and financial aid initiatives.
