Description: |
Tea pickers working in the field in Nshili, Nyaruguru. Tea pickers put the tea leaves in a woven basket that they wear on their back. Each basket holds about 6 kilos of leaves, and will earn the tea picker 25 francs (or $ .05) per kilo. They transfer their full baskets into bags. An energetic tea picker can gather up to 40 kilos a day, earning 1000 francs per day (or $2), working from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm. The tea factory is just up the road, where they bring their harvest at the end of their work day. |
