Title: Rwanda - Smallholder Cash and Export Crops Development Project - May 2010
Description: Workers spread out fresh tea leaves to ready it for withering at the COTHENK tea factory in Nshili – Kivu area. To reduce the water content from 80% to 60%, the leaves are spread out on wire mesh beds and cool air is blown onto them. This takes 18 hours.

The factory buys green leaf tea from the cooperative of tea farmers. The whole process from green leaf to processed sold tea and pay back to farmers lasts approximately two weeks. The coop owns 15% shares in the factory. Once processed, the tea is shipped by truck to the Mombasa Tea Auction on Kenya and is sold within a week.

The tea produced is rated as third best in Rwanda. The factory currently produces 1 million kilo’s of processed tea.
