Title: Rwanda - Smallholder Cash and Export Crops Development Project - May 2010
Description: Workers oxidate and ferment chopped up tea at tea factory in Nshili – Kivu area (COTHENK). The factory buys green leaf tea from the cooperative of tea farmers. The whole process from green leaf to processed sold tea and pay back to farmers lasts approximately two weeks. The coop owns 15% shares in the factory. Once processed, the tea is shipped by truck to the Mombasa Tea Auction on Kenya and is sold within a week.

The tea produced is rated as third best in Rwanda. The factory currently produces 1 million kilo’s of processed tea.

The chopped tea is left out to the open air, to change color (from green to black) and is sifted to break up lumps.
