The majority of the rural poor practise subsistence agriculture.Rice is the most important crop (representing the 37% of Malagasy agricultural cash income). Other cash crops vary according to agro-ecological conditions and market opportunities; they include milk, poultry, fruit and vegetables for the domestic market, and vanilla, other spices and litchis for exports.
