Title: Kenya - Smallholder Horticulture Marketing Programme (SHOMAP), November 2013
Description: The Pyhort self-help group has built a potato storage shed in remote Nyandarua North County. Nine potato farmers in the area collect and store their potatoes here during peak harvest time and sell in bulk three months later, to make a profit.

Due to altitude and heavy rains, the dirt roads connecting farms in the area are often inaccessible during the harvest season. Farmers had little choice but to sell their harvests to middlemen that drove large collection trucks and were able to visit individual farms to bargain unsustainably low prices.

The new potato storage shed can house up to 800 kilos of potatoes at one time. The group has made a profit of 269,000 Kenyan shillings (approx. USD 3085) in two years.
