Title: India - Post-Tsunami Sustainable Livelihoods Programme for the Coastal Communities of Tamil Nadu – August 2014
Description: Fishermen repair their nets in Kanyakumari village, Tamil Nadu, India.

The Kanyakumari fishing society is made up of 150 fishermen and four auctioneers. The fishermen bring in their catch to the loading dock and the auctioneers sell the fish wholesale to villagers, often women, who will then sell the fish retail in the local market. The fish are brought by tuc tuc or motorbike to the market.

The project has provided training in fish handling, ice boxes, nets and cutting knives to the local fishermen. The area was heavily affected by the Tsunami of 26 December 2004. After the tsunami, their boats and nets were destroyed and it took five months for the fishermen to be able to take up their fishing activities.
