Mariam Zakane Welgo, 27, processes rice in Bagre, Burkina Faso. Supported by IFAD, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, PAMER (Projet d'Appui aux Micro Entreprises Rurales) provides farmers with training and support to develop micro-enterprises in rural areas of Burkina Faso. Mariam Zakane Welgo runs a rice processing business from her family compound. She now processes up to 20 tonnes of rice a year and sells it across the region, including in the capital Ouagadougou. "Before it was just a little village trade. Now in the house there is happiness. Before, my husband was the head of the house and I relied on him for everything. Now it's the other way around and I have my own money. I now have my own bank account at the savings bank. I never thought before that I would have my own bank account!" |
