Women’s cooperative in Haiziyan village, Balikun county, produces both hand and machine-made embroidery. There are 70 women members of the cooperative. They have received advanced embroidery training and provided training to an additional 130 women in the area, who are considered staff. Members are of the Kazakh ethnic group, one of 56 ethnic groups recognized by the People’s Republic of China. Embroidery is a traditional Kazakh handicraft . The programme has helped women to form a cooperative and to obtain large contracts for their goods. They have also installed a high-tech embroidery machine to supplement outputs. Products include carpets, quilts, clothes and home decoration. These are often part of typical marriage ceremony’s and dowries. The Kazakh people traditionally marry on horseback. |
