Li Guo Ting, 55, has been a farmer for 30 years in Xixiang village. He began running a flaxseed oil mill in 2008. In 2009, with help from the project, Li Guo began improving on his business by aggregating farmers who grow flaxseed, extending his sales network and working towards certifying his flaxseed oil with the organic “Green Food” label. In 2010, Li formed a cooperative of 250 smallholder farmers growing flaxseed. By 2014, the farmers grew flaxseed based on pre-established contracts with the cooperative. “My parents were farmers, we have always planted flax, potatoes and corn. Flax is the most profitable because it attracts a higher market value and people recognize it as a health food,” says Li Guo Ting. |
