Title: China - Inner Mongolia Autonomous Regional Rural Advance Program (IMARAAP) - May 2015
Description: Cai Xiu Lian, 62, and her husband Fan Ji Xu, 65, are farmers who grow flax for the cooperative. The own 1.3 hectares of land (20 mu) and dedicate .46 hectares (7 mu) to flax farming. They sell all of their flax to the cooperative for 10 yen a kilo. They also raise sheep. They feed the 30 sheep corn, straw and flax seed husks that have already been processed at the mill.

Cai and Fan have a son that owns and runs a small restaurant next door. He still farms with his parents when he can. When asked why he did not leave the countryside for a job in the city, like so many young people of his generation, Cai says, “ He desires to farm because it is a safe way to make ends meet. If you go outside income is good but expenses are high. At home he can raise pigs and sheep and farm the land. He comes back from the restaurant to plough the fields – he can manage the equipment better. When he does that, I replace him in the restaurant.”
