Title: Rome - Ethnic Textile Innovation: Indigenous Youth - February 2015
Description: In the context of the Second Global Meeting of the Indigenous Peoples’ Forum at IFAD, the Ethnic Textile Innovation: Indigenous
Youth fashion show was held on 12 February 2015.

The innovative work of young stylist Daniel Syiem from Shillong, India. In partnership with Janessaline Mary Pyngrope, Daniel founded the Daniel Syiem’s Ethnic Fashion House in 2011. His vision is to raise awareness about the dying art of weaving, contribute to the preservation of indigenous peoples’ culture, and create income-generating opportunities for rural women and youth.

Daniel’s work redefines the traditional hand-woven fabrics of the Meghalaya region through the creative use of natural vegetable dyes, in order to create apparel with contemporary and international appeal. At the same time, he is protecting and reviving the ethnic textiles of North-East India.

The work of the Fashion House builds on seven years of experience with IFAD-funded projects that seek to promote and revive weaving as a means for rural communities to generate income. The Fashion House holds workshops in the villages in order to enable indigenous youth and women to seize the income
opportunities that traditional weaving offers.

The Forum held its second global meeting on 12-13 February 2015 at IFAD headquarters in Rome. It was attended by about 40 representatives from indigenous peoples’ organizations and institutions from Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean.
