Wildredo Guardado Alas, 37, (left), with his mother, Doña Felipa de Jesús Rivera de Alas, 83, in the family home in Guarjila, El Salvador. Wilfredo Guardado Alas joined the guerrilla when he was 11 years old, and fought for over 10 years. He lost both his hands during the war, but he now runs a small grocery store, drives a small truck, studies law and is one of the community leaders in Chalatenango. He shows a picture of himself carrying a gun with great pride, and says that the same conditions that drove people to the war, namely the poverty and lack of opportunities, are still prevalent in Salvadoran society. |
