Ebaldina Jesus Santiago, 35, cooks beans with gas produced by a biogester outside their home, at Aldeia Marcação Kiriri, near Ribeira do Pombal, in the state of Bahia, Brazil, on Tuesday, April 12, 2016. Her husband, Jailson de Jesus Mendes, collects cow manure. It takes five kilos of cow manure plus 15 liters of water, and two hours later, there is gas for 24 hours. "Before it cost us $50 reals a month to buy gas, now we can buy other things." The biodigester, built four years ago, breaks down cattle manure and converts it into methane gas to be used as energy for cooking stoves. The byproduct is then used as fertilizer. |
