Title: Malawi - Sustainable Agricultural Production Programme (SAAP) June 20162016
Description: Kanyombo village_GVC Kanyombo covers the soil in his field with leaves left from the maize harvest. This conservation agricolture technique keep the moisture in the soil and prevent unwanted grass to grow.

My name is GVC Kanyombo, I’m 35, I’m married and I have 4 children.
I’m a farmer, I grow maize and peanuts in my 4 acres of land as long as mango and papaya trees, I also keep goats and chickens.
With the Conservation agriculture technics I’ve learned form the SAAP project, as covering the soil to keep the moisture and using manure to fertilise the soil, I’ve managed to increase my maize production from 30 bags (of 50 kg) to 110. Now I’m not forced to sell my harvest to the middlemen and I can wait the price to raise.
Before I was selling one bag of maize at 7000 Kwacha, this year I think I can get 11000 as several farmers who didn’t practice conservation agriculture didn’t harvest at all and the price will rise.
My life has changed a lot. I’ve built a new house. At first I was not able to do this but now with the maize that I’ve harvested I was even able to buy the furnitures for my house that I always wanted. I harvested so much that I have even been able to help my relatives .
My plan for the future is to buy cattle, an ox cart and a car because I envy people who drive a car.
For my children I hope they can study until university and not be like us because we are not educated and we envy our friends who drive cars and have chairs in theirs homes, so I don’t want our children to face the same sacrifices. I want a better life for them.
