Title: Malawi - IFAD Country Programme - June 2016
Description: Kapatuka_ Philip Njalale sets up the irrigation system for his potatoes field.

My name is Philip Njalale, I’m 36, I’m married and I have 2 children.
I’m a farmer, I grow maize and potatoes and I keep 3 cows, 30 goats and 5 pigs.
The LREEP project push me up really, with the techniques I learned I’ve changed my system and I’m harvesting almost the double of potatoes from the same land, from 5 bags of 230 kg to 10. I’m expecting to make at least 500.000 Kwacha this year.
I’m part of the Kanyama cooperative , we are 108 members and we sell potatoes as a group, this means we can set the price of our products, before we could just accept what the middlemen proposed. We managed to get almost the triple of the price.
My life is totally changed.
In the past I was working as migrant in south Africa and 3 years ago I decided to come back here and start farming , then I found the project that helped me a lot.
The cows I own come from this farming, pigs as well, I bought a motorbike, I bought a sofa seat for my house, a tv, a small solar panel a battery, all those staff are coming from here. I’m also employing 3 person.
I’m lucky as I have water here, I make irrigation agriculture and I can produce all the year but I want to extend my irrigation system with a new pump and more pipes so I can irrigate also the part of my land that is too far now.
I always push my children to work extra hard at school. I opened a bank account for them because I don’t know if tomorrow I will here so I always save something for them.
