Title: Nigeria - Rural Finance Institution-Building Programme (RUFIN) - June 2016
Description: Kingsley Osinachi Nwaogu 29 years, from Amizi Awomnezie Automonous Community in Ikwuano L.G.A. Abia State. He is a member of a registered bee-keeping farmers association comprising 7 members (5males and 2 females). The association obtained its certificate of operation in 2012. As a graduate, the lure for white-collar job could not separate him from the passion he has for beekeeping (apiculture) business which produces honey. In 2013, when he started the business it was basically in its crude form with basic equipment available at his disposal. Thus his production level bee honey, bee wax, royal jelly, etc. was basically subsistence and a bit of commercial. In 2014, Kingsley and his group got in touch with CBNRMP state office in Abia State. Since then the story of these upcoming entrepreneurs has not remained the same. The programme provided the group with technical knowledge through series of workshops, training sessions and market linkages. With the help of CADA in the Amizi Community, the members were sensitized and strengthened on group dynamics. During the training session organized by CBNRMP on Management of Beekeeping and its maintenance, Mr. Kingsley learnt how to construct bee hives, harvest, store, process, package as well as some marketing techniques; with the technical and logistical support from CBNRMP to begin a new enterprise. His paltry number of 15 hives grew to about a 100 Hives and the group having about 400 hives in total. This is distributed across the Amizi community. Their production which was averaging 3 – 5 litres per hives/harvest grew to 10 – 12 litres per hive/harvest. A litre goes for N2,000.00Currently, the income from beekeeping business has enabled him to enroll in a Master’s degree programme, expanded his farm operations to include unique packaging and branding. A world class bee-keeping rural farm school/skill acquisition centre has been setup and large quantity production of other bee honey products rolled out. He has trained over 17 entrepreneurs (12males & 5females) in bee farming enterprise in a sustainable manner. Other beekeeping farming communities (Amaibo and Atan Abam) are currently replicating his success in their locations. He has developed customized baiting materials which are locally fabricated extracting machines and refiners for bee farming groups. The group is also replacing the shrubs and trees in bushes where the hives are positioned with flowering plants which richly produce nectars the major material which bees turn into honey and other products such as honey wax, comb etc which attract financial rewards. It is my desire to transform my remote community to a honey exporting zone as well as a tourist destination as we have them in Israel “says Kingsley, the young honey entrepreneur”.
