Omolara processing fish in her farm in Ikorodu, Lagos. Omolara, 47 yrs was a teacher but had to resign because the job became a routine and the salary was meagre and irregular and could hardly meet her family needs. After resigning her teaching job, she went into the business of trading farm produce like garri, rice, beans, yam and others. Unfortunately in 2006 she was victim of arm robbery attacked and lost all her money for the business and returned home dejected. A major turning point came in 2008 when the Lagos State government organised catfish farming training which Omolara participated in. After the training, Omolara started her fish farming business and decided to specialise in the processing of catfish instead of rearing because the latter requires intensive capital.The fish farming business reignited her hope for a decent future specially with advent of the IFAD Rural Finance Institution Building Programme (RUFIN), a rural finance scheme for farmers and allied businesses being implemented in 12 states across the six geo-political zones over a seven-year period and specifically targets marginalised groups such as women, young people and those with physical disabilities backed with funding support from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). She and other farmers formed a cooperative called God is Able and were able secure several loans and participate trainings to improve their fishing business thank to the IFAD’Today she has customers coming from others states in Nigeria like Kogi, Kaduna, Abuja, Kano, Abia, Anambra.Her next goal is to get her fish into the export market. She is already in talks with Nigeria Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to get the products certified. |
