Title: Nigeria, IFAD Value Chain Development Programme , June, 2016.
Description: Iye in Guma local government in Benue state, Nigeria.
Ukura Vitalis, 46 is married with 6 children and earn a living from large scale yam faming during the raining season. With the introduction of IFAD value chain development programme in his community he has been trained and given technical support on how to practice dry season farming. This dry season farming ensures he is engaged with farming all seasons of the year, resulting to bumper harvests and boosts his earning in the years to come. His major challenge is the invasion and destruction of their farms by cattle that grazed in them.IFAD intervention also inspired the founding of the Mbabegha Multipurpose cooperative in which Ukura is among the 15members and their plans to increase membership to 25. The cooperative have been enjoying IFAD support like regular training for it members on best agriculture practices, subsidizing the cost of tractor use for the land and herbcides to about 50%.He wishes IFAD support can be extending to their community youths so that they could be self-employed and even use their income from farming to diversify into business like transportation.
Iye in Guma local government in Benue state, Nigeria is one of the beneficiary communities of the IFAD Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP). This programme takes a holistic and demand-driven approach to addressing constraints along the cassava and rice value chains. It does this by:• Developing agricultural markets and increasing market access for smallholder farmers and small to medium-scale agro-processors• Enhancing smallholder productivity – and thus increasing the volume and quality of marketable produce – by strengthening farmers' organizations as well as supporting smallholder production. The objective is to sustainably enhance rural incomes and food security. The target groups include 15,000 smallholder farming households, 1,680 processors and 800 traders.
