Title: China - Inauguration of IFAD Country Office in Beijing - 25 October 2016
Description: On 25 October, Perin Saint Ange, Associate Vice President, Programme Management Department, led in formally inaugurating the new China country office in Beijing. He delivered an opening statement to guests from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture, the International Poverty Reduction Center in China, the China Africa Fund and representatives from UN agencies, International Financial Institutions and other development partners. Liu Weihua, Deputy Director General, Department of International Economic and Financial Cooperation, Ministry of Finance, opened the ceremony with introductory remarks.

"The IFAD Country Office in China is essential to strengthen IFAD’s presence in such an important country as China – a country that is committed to eradicating rural poverty by 2020. China has made great progress in bringing prosperity to its citizens yet there are still 56 million people living in poverty. We need to work Bigger, Better, Smarter in order to support China in meeting its poverty reduction goals,” said Perin in his opening statement. “IFAD is considered a source of global knowledge and rural development best practices that can be tested and scaled-up nationally, and inform policy-making. Likewise, China’s successful experience in reducing rural poverty and bringing about rural transformation should be shared with other developing countries through South-South cooperation.”

The ceremony included unveiling the IFAD plaque and then enjoying refreshments. IFAD ex-General Council Gerard Sanders attended on behalf of the Asian Infrastructure Development Bank, as well as colleagues from the World Bank, the Asia Development Bank, UNHCR, FAO, UNESCO, WFP, ILO and UNEP.

Matteo Marchisio, Country Programme Manager was MC at the event and China country office colleagues Yinhong Sun, Ke Lu and Yilei Zhang coordinated the inauguration. Perin was accompanied by his daughter Anna Saint Ange, and colleagues Ya Tian and Susan Beccio.
