Title: Myanmar - Fostering Agricultural Revitalization in Myanmar - August - 2016
Description: Daw Ei Phyu, a labourer, picks okra in a field belonging to U Myint Khaing, near the village of Si Pin Thayar in Myanmar. She is careful to only pick okra of a certain size, as after picking it will be graded. The selected produce will be frozen at a nearby factory and then exported to Japan, where it will be used for hospital meals.

This arrangement has been put into place thanks to IFAD's Fostering Agricultural Revitalization in Myanmar (FARM) project. The project has introduced an innovation in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MoALI) extension services, under the form of facilities known as Knowledge Centers (KCs). KCs are community-level facilities staffed by an extension officer seconded from the MoALI, the KC Manager, which facilitate communities’ access to knowledge, resources and markets.

U Myint Khaing is one of the farmers assisted by Daw Mya Thandar, Manager for KC #9. With support from FARM staff, Daw Mya Thandar arranged for a meeting between the company and the farmers in her area, and helped the farmers understand the terms of the proposed agreement before signing a contract. Several farmers have undertaken successful contracts this way, U Myint Khain being one example: he estimates that by the end of the season he will have made ten times the profit he made growing tomatoes on this half-acre the previous year. He is going to expand okra production to a larger area for next year, and local farmers have been visiting his fields and considering signing contracts for the production of various vegetables as well (okra, taro, long bean, and pumpkin).
