Altanshagai, 34, with his herd in Motont Soum, Mongolia. Altanshagai is the head of a herders group in Motont Soum. They also grow vegetables. The group collectively cultivates 20 hectares of hay and protect and preserve a nearby forest. They collect pine nuts and wild berries to increase their incomes. The herder group has set up a schedule of rotated grazing in order to preserve the pasture land. There are 15 households in group. They have set up a community fund, and contribute the income they make from selling surplus vegetables to the fund. They spend the money on fencing material, seeds, fuel for a tractor and hiring someone to work on land. They have received a small tractor from the project for haymaking and are now able to make more hay for winter preparation. The group also started growing fodder plants and selling the surplus to nearby herders. |
