Title: Mongolia - Rural Poverty Reduction Programme - June 2009
Description: Togtohjargal, 41, 3 children, pouring milk in her household in Ikhtamir Soum, Mongolia.

Togtohjargal is part of a herders group in Ikhtamir village. She boils milk to make butter. She collects milk, butter, yogurt and kurd from the other herding families and sells in bulk at the central town market. By doing this, it is profitable to sell in the town market despite transportation costs and taking the time out from intense summer work including milking and dairy processing. Her herding group has just arrived at their new summer camp site and they are setting up their gher or tent.

In 1997, Togtohjargal's family received 28 sheep and 6 cattle under IFAD supported Restocking project. They now have 200 livestock and have paid back their animal loan 100%.

"For our family, the restocking project was very good for us. We even have a flat screen TV now. We have 200 livestock, which our family can manage, but we have few members so we can not take on more than that. If someone marries then we will need to give some livestock to them. Sometimes families pay us to take care of their livestock or let us use the milk as payment for this service. This is very good for our livelihood."
