Title: Mongolia - Rural Poverty Reduction Programme - June 2009
Description: Children learning to read and write at the mobile kindergarten in Tunel village, Mongolia.

The mobile or gher (tent) kindergartens are an innovative way to integrate pre-school herder children into the education system. During the summer months, while their parents are busy milking and processing dairy products, young children from herder households, living in remote areas, can learn to socialize and prepare for full-time schooling. Once children reach the age of 6, in order to get an education, they most likely will have to stay in a dormitory in the village during the school week or with relatives living near the school. The mobile kindergarten also benefits the welfare of the population by bringing herder households together to form a community and to teach parents and children about basic hygiene and nutrition. Parents are expected to organize amongst themselves to contribute food, water and firewood to the school for its duration. In one gher kindergarten that the project supports, children learn to wash their hands and faces before meals and to brush their teeth afterwards. They also learn to identify and eat local vegetables.
