Herders with livestock on the open plain in Husvgul Aimag, Mongolia. Experts say that the land is overloaded with animals with 2 3 times the number that the land can sustain. Furthermore, because of the profitability of cashmere, in recent years the number of goats has increased considerably. Since goats are radical grazers, eating grass and shrubs down to the roots, they can cause considerable damage to the topsoil and their grazing needs to be contained and planned. A plot of land that would normally provide 1 ton of grass, will provide 1.8 tons if it has been fenced off and 2.5 tons if fertilizer is used. Therefore, IFAD's Rural Poverty Reduction Programme has invested in providing materials for fencing for rural communities and herder groups. |
