Children and women working and weeding freshly sown millet, Aguie Niger. Subject to environmental pressures such as insufficient rain fall, locust infestations, and grain deficits, rural communities in the Maradi region of Niger experienced a mass emigration from villages as a high proportion of able bodied men left in search of work. Not only does this migration put a strain on families, it also puts more pressure on women and children who have to carry out more tasks than usual. Consequently, agricultural recovery is hampered. IFADs Project for the Promotion of Local Initiatives works with rural communities to improve food security, living conditions, and participation in local governance. |
