Title: Ethiopia - Indigenous Tree Species Restoration, Climate Change Adaptation and Indigenous Livelihood Enhancement Project November 2018
Description: Ethiopia, Gendo Gembella, Liyo village, NOV 2018
Gamo people.
Chencha- Guggie Indigenous Tree Species Restoration, Local Climate Change Adaptation and Indigenous Livelihood Enhancement Project
Mr Gata Kalda (blue jacket and colourful hat, 52 years of age) is a farmer in Gendo Gembella, Liyo village.
Gata Kalda learnt about the project from Initiative Living Community Action (ILCA). He learnt how to set up a nursery, and afterwards he used the leaves of the new trees as a natural fertilizer. He explains that the trees generate a nice shade. Before this project started Gata was part of the Ethiopian safety-net program, a UN supported program to assist the poorest of the poor and was one of the beneficiaries of the food for cash programs. He left the safety-net program after his crops had improved and he was able to set up a sustainable life.
On the picture: Gata Kalda is an excellent weaver as well. Gamo people are famous for their weaving skills. They are proudly wearing the clothes themselves, but the clothes also generate income. Tourists that pass by in Chencha district are always delighted to buy them as a souvenir.
The project members were given some cash, which was used for several means, including education for their children, buying cattle, house construction and weaving.
