Description: Ethiopia, Gendo Gembella, Liyo village, NOV 2018
Gamo people.
Chencha- Guggie Indigenous Tree Species Restoration, Local Climate Change Adaptation and Indigenous Livelihood Enhancement Project
Mr Gata Kalda (blue jacket and colourful hat, 52 years of age) is a farmer in Gendo Gembella, Liyo village.
Gata Kalda learnt about the project from Initiative Living Community Action (ILCA). He learnt how to set up a nursery, and afterwards he used the leaves of the new trees as a natural fertilizer. He explains that the trees generate a nice shade. Before this project started Gata was part of the Ethiopian safety-net program, a UN supported program to assist the poorest of the poor and was one of the beneficiaries of the food for cash programs. He left the safety-net program after his crops had improved and he was able to set up a sustainable life.
Gata Kalda learnt about the project from Ilka. He learnt how to set up a nursery, and afterwards he used the leaves of the new trees as a natural fertilizer. He explains that the trees generate a nice shade for the crops.
