Stanley Mchome (left) is a Mkulima Shushushu (a spy farmer). He uses his mobile phone to communicate current market prices from a variety of traders and markets to producers in his group. Fatuma Juma, (right) 36, is a member of Mshikamano saccos cooperative. She resells fruits and vegetables that she buys from the Arusha central market. She receives no market information prior to going to the market herself. The transactions still depend much on the bargaining power that I have. Magugu village market, Babati, Tanzania. The First Mile Project began in 2005 concentrating on developing the connection between suppliers in rural areas and markets. By concentrating on this initial link,"the first mile", the project endeavors to maximize the earning potential of rural small-scale farmers and food processors. |
