Tonga, Tonga Rural Innovation Project - Phase II, December, 2019
Description:
Ikenasio Taulangovaka, Chief Operations Officer of Component I at MORDI holds a young kava plant at the MORDI compound on the outskirts of Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu. Kava is typically and ideally harvested after it has reached approximately 5 years of age. Kava, the national drink of Tonga, is made from the roots of the kava plant (piper methysticum). The bitter tasting drink is non-addictive and non-alcoholic and produces a mild soporific and anti-anxiety effect while promoting feelings of wellbeing without affecting mental functions. Kava is an important drink that is widely conusmed throughout the Pacific Islands. Kava is also becoming an important cash crop that is exported in large amounts to other parts of the Pacific as well as the United States, New Zealand and Europe.
