Title: | Yemen - Tihama Environment Protection Project - October 2002 |
Description: |
Mohammad Ali Zein, 50, waters a Balanitis Egyptiaca tree in Hodeida, Yemen. The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is a special financing agency of the United Nations to support the rural poor of the developing world. One of the many projects funded is a rural district near Hodeida, Yemen, where arable land and water are scarce and raising domestic animals is the main source of income. The objective of the program is twofold: - Fixation of sand dunes by means of irrigation and cultivation. - Women, traditionally without access to land and education, receive small bank loans enabling them to buy livestock at local markets or launch micro-enterprises. This strengthens their independence and fights overall poverty. |
