Title: Kenya, Upper Tana Catchment Natural Resource Management Project (UTaNRMP), December, 2019
Description: Edward Riungu, 80, walks alongside part of a 60km long solar powered electric fence separating communities living adjacent to Mt. Kenya National Park, in Chogoria village, in Tharaka-Nithi County, Kenya. “The elephants used to come out every day, and we would use drum empty tins as loud as possible to chase them back to the park. We would also call the Wild life rangers to chase them back to the forest. It would not take long before they were back. So we would barely sleep because of the continuous distance. Today, we sleep, and we grow food crops without any invasion. Before the fence was constructed, I was cultivating less than half a bag of maize and since the fence, I harvest up to 5 bags, so the changes are glaring, and we are at peace and happy.”
