Title: Sri Lanka - Smallholder Tea and Rubber Revitalization Project (STARR) – December 2021
Description: Priyantha Sisirakumara, a husband and father of two children, is a tea picker.
Priyantha doesn't talk much, but when it comes to hands on work, he's extremely hard-working and able. His days start a 7 AM and he works in the fields, picking tea until 2 PM. The rest of the afternoon is spent packaging the harvest and preparing it to sell it.

He brings the harvest to a collection centre supported by the STaRR project, after which buyers come and purchase it. The harvested tea plants are then taken to a processing plant and the production process begins.

With the support of STaRR, a road was constructed to the collection centre, allowing easier access for the buyers. As a result, there is greater demand and Priyantha can get better prices for his product and sell more of it.

The IFAD-funded Smallholder Tea and Rubber Revitalization Project aims to improve food security, increase incomes, and strengthen the resilience of poor rural people in Sri Lanka, all while ensuring that the smallholders are the key decision-makers of the project. By promoting organization among smallholders to produce and market tea, supporting them in improving rubber production and processing, seeking a better link to markets, and facilitating smallholders’ access to rural financing, this project will benefit approximately 32,000 smallholder households.
