Title: Sri Lanka - Smallholder Tea and Rubber Revitalization Project (STARR) – December 2021
Description: Supun Gamlath, a young college graduate who lives with family, is a passionate auto painter.

Through a loan received from the STARR project, Supun was able to build his dream, to open his own garage. He runs the business from his home, which allows him to be there and help out is parents, who are farmers, two sisters and his grandmother.

Supun has also taken advantage of social media and uses channels such as Facebook, where he has a page for his garage, to advertise his work and attract more business and clients.

His experience had inspired other young adults in Supun’s area, and he has been training them and giving them jobs in his garage. While his focus is on his garage and improving and growing the business, he still finds the time to lend a hand on the family farm.

The IFAD-funded Smallholder Tea and Rubber Revitalization Project aims to improve food security, increase incomes, and strengthen the resilience of poor rural people in Sri Lanka, all while ensuring that the smallholders are the key decision-makers of the project. By promoting organization among smallholders to produce and market tea, supporting them in improving rubber production and processing, seeking a better link to markets, and facilitating smallholders’ access to rural financing, this project will benefit approximately 32,000 smallholder households.
