Mavis is a 50-year-old mother and grandmother from Kangomba Ward village in the Kabwe District. She is recently widowed and is a beneficiary of the IFAD supported Enhanced Smallholder Livestock Investment Programme (E-SLIP).
As a beneficiary Mavis has managed to purchase a solar powered water system for her farm which has greatly helped her mitigate some of the adverse effects of climate change over recent years, caused by irregular rain patterns and severe droughts. Mavis is now able to irrigate her crops all year around which in turn means she is able to farm maize, soyabeans and produce velvet beans and cow peas which she sells as much needed forage to other small-scale farmers around Zambia.
Covid-19 created a harsh economic environment for Mavis as she was unable to sell her vegetables at the market due to restricted movements. It also meant she was unable to hire casual labour to work with her on the farm. Old age made her fear more for her health and she admits to feeling much more secure once she had her COVID vaccine.
She learnt about the E-SLIP funding through local livestock officers and was offered training in capacity building. She also received all the inputs required to weigh and package the forage seeds for sale and distribution and has watched her income double as a result of the assistance from the Fund. She is now able to make her own feed for her livestock which saves her a lot of money.
The Rural Poor Stimulus Facility (RPSF) funds were used for the project Covid-19 Smart Livestock Production and Productivity Project (RPSF I) under the Enhanced Smallholder Livestock Investment Programme (E-SLIP). The overall goal of the project was to “sustainably build resilience against shocks caused by COVID-19 in livestock production and productivity systems among targeted poor livestock farming households” with the aim to maintain the E-SLIP progress towards its IFAD11 Impact Targets.
Additional RPSF funds were used to scale-up the work and increase the outreach and add complementary activities to the original RPSF work that allowed the sustainability of E-SLIP and RPSF results.
