Mabvuio Zulli is a 52-year-old farmer based in the Katete District of the Eastern Province in Zambia. Katete has a history of having suffered one of the worst outbreaks of East Coast Fever (ECF) when the disease first broke out in Zambia. The IFAD supported Enhanced Smallholder Livestock Investment Programme (E-SLIP) has continued to build upon ECF control interventions and has facilitated the production of a stabilate, called Katete stabilate, targeted at controlling the strain of ECF that is predominant in Katete. Mabvuio acknowledges that the ECF prevention program has helped him tremendously. When he received his first calf in 2006, it died soon after due to East Coast Fever. As soon as the vaccination programme became available, he began to vaccinate his cows and since then he has not lost a single cow. He now has 15 male and 15 female cows. He is now also able to farm soya beans, maize and groundnuts thanks to the healthy cattle that he utilizes to plough his fields. He plans to increase the number of cattle to 50 over coming years. The Rural Poor Stimulus Facility (RPSF) funds were used for the project Covid-19 Smart Livestock Production and Productivity Project (RPSF I) under the Enhanced Smallholder Livestock Investment Programme (E-SLIP). The overall goal of the project was to “sustainably build resilience against shocks caused by COVID-19 in livestock production and productivity systems among targeted poor livestock farming households” with the aim to maintain the E-SLIP progress towards its IFAD11 Impact Targets. Additional RPSF funds were used to scale-up the work and increase the outreach and add complementary activities to the original RPSF work that allowed the sustainability of E-SLIP and RPSF results. |
