Title: Zambia - Enhanced Smallholder Livestock Investment Programme (E-SLIP) - August 2022
Description: Lack of access to water is a large problem in many of the villages. Women have to travel long distances to find water and are often away from their homes for an entire day and farmers need to move their livestock quite far to find water for their animals to drink. Lack of access to clean water is also the cause of diseases in people as well as animals.

In an area where rangeland management is being promoted, close to the village of Shangobeka , a solar powered borehole has been built.

The borehole has provided the villagers with clean, drinking water, reducing the cases of diarrhea and other illnesses, and has been particularly important during COVID. It has shortened the distance the women have to travel and ensured they have water and giving them more time for other activities. The borehole also provides enough drinking water for the livestock and is also used to water small vegetable gardens.

The Rural Poor Stimulus Facility (RPSF) funds were used for the project Covid-19 Smart Livestock Production and Productivity Project (RPSF I) under the Enhanced Smallholder Livestock Investment Programme (E-SLIP). The overall goal of the project was to “sustainably build resilience against shocks caused by COVID-19 in livestock production and productivity systems among targeted poor livestock farming households” with the aim to maintain the E-SLIP progress towards its IFAD11 Impact Targets.

Additional RPSF funds were used to scale-up the work and increase the outreach and add complementary activities to the original RPSF work that allowed the sustainability of E-SLIP and RPSF results.
