Title: Nepal – Rural Poor Stimulus Facility (RPSF) – March 2022
Description: The Agricultural Development Bank’s (ADBL’s) Kisan app was developed with support from the RPSF. Khadak Bahadur Thapa, the CEO of Buddhanagar Agro (BA), a cooperative store and farm, demonstrates how the app is used.

The Kisan app serves as a platform to optimise farming processes. This allows the farmer to communicate and transact with merchants, as well as withdraw money and make payments to cashpoint agents.

It also provides digital non-financial services through a knowledge centre, where farmers can find FAQs, information regarding farming, prices in different market, and other information such as success stories, and information related to the agri-merchants and agents. RPSF funds are not only supporting the app development, but also being used to train ADBL staff who are then sharing it with farmers to scale-up use.

Khadak currently uses the app to track market prices and adjust his buying and selling prices accordingly, as well as reach out to technical experts when needed.

In Nepal, RPSF funds supported laying the foundation for scaling-up the upcoming VITA project. The project will implement a new credit card and mobile phone application for money and information transfers and automated loan processing. The RPSF grant accelerated the roll-out of Kisan cards (in Nepalese, kisan is a farmer) and app providing digital financial services, automatic loan processing, reducing face-to-face transactions and promoting financial literacy and savings to build resilience.
