ADBL is IFAD’s implementing partner for the RPSF project in Nepal. “Farmers used to not get paid for their sales and when they did, they didn’t get the correct market rate. Agricultural inputs are also expensive. These two problems encouraged us to introduce the Kisan card and app.” “Through the Kisan app, farmers get information about the availability of raw materials, foods, seeds, fertilizers and certified and registered dealers. Also, farmers did not get timely payment for their products, and they had to rely on middlemen to sell. The Kisan card lets them sell directly to the traders. Through the card, the traders make digital payments which immediately send money to the farmer's account. As the farmers already get information about market price through the app, they know what to expect. This allows farmers to receive an appropriate price for their products. When using it to access inputs, farmers get raw materials and inputs in a proper way, from a certified source and at the right time. Because of this, their income has increased. This is the change that we have noticed.” In Nepal, RPSF funds supported laying the foundation for scaling-up the upcoming VITA project. The project will implement a new credit card and mobile phone application for money and information transfers and automated loan processing. The RPSF grant accelerated the roll-out of Kisan cards (in Nepalese, kisan is a farmer) and app providing digital financial services, automatic loan processing, reducing face-to-face transactions and promoting financial literacy and savings to build resilience. |
