Title: | Sierra Leone - Rural Finance and Community Improvement Programme (RFCIP) - June 2022 |
Description: |
Surmarine Thompson Fatorma - The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) established the Rural Finance and Community Improvement Programme (RFCIP) in 2008 to help ensure that rural communities have access to the financial services they need. The programme now boasts of 76 Rural Financial Institutions (RFIs) located in rural towns and villages across the country. “Most people here do agriculture. Even if we are university educated, we come back and do agriculture here. My late Father was a chief and had a cacao plantation. He died during the civil war. When I came back to take up cacao farming, I found the trees old an non-productive. I used my teacher salary as collateral and got a loan from the Jawei Financial Services Association, which allowed me to buy more than 200 seedlings and to replant the plantation. Every year I get a new loan so I can do more investments on the plantation.” |
